2011 NeCODP Metadata Workshop Resources

The Workshop

The Metadata workshop in June 9th will be focused on learning about the ISO metadata standard. We will be getting familiar with XML editing tools and transforming EXISTING partner records from GCMD and FGDC and using these transformed records as a starting point for understanding the ISO standard.

The instructors will be teaching using the Oxygen XML editor. Due to our limited face-to-face time, we thought it made sense to try to get on the same technology rather than spend time reviewing the pluses and minuses of various editors.

To get the most out of the tools, a full XML editor is necessary to execute the files needed to transform the records.

The more you can do in advance of Thursday, the quicker we can get started and the more we will cover!

You will need:

--Laptop
--XML Editor
--Training materials

• Oxygen XML Editor - http://www.oxygenxml.com/xml_editor.html 
  *Oxygen offers a FREE 30 day trial w/o needing a credit card, and is available for purchase by academic/non profits for $64. It is available for Mac, Windows, Linux and Eclipse
  

• XMLSpy - http://www.altova.com/xml-editor/

Other metadata editors specific to ISO:

• CatMDEdit - http://catmdedit.sourceforge.net (desktop GUI)

• GeoNetwork - http://geonetwork-opensource.org/ - catalog application, with metadata editor

 
**For those who are unable to install software on a work computer, we will have one or two spare laptops and can "buddy up" if need be.
