ODP IE Project Plan

by NeCODP last modified Mar 26, 2009 03:10 PM

Goal: Build upon the Exchange Network (EN) project as appropriate to support wider use by the Parnership.  In particular, through the ODP IE, we are creating or have created:

  1. Map-based UI that so Partners can easily verify/correct their GCMD metadata content
  2. Data-access catalog for member data in the Exchange Network (uses the GCMD API)
  3. Map-based UI that will become the Exchange Network data-access portal later in 2009.

Specific tasks include:

1) Augment existing Exchange Network (EN) Grant.

While working with the partners on the EN grant, it became obvious that a tiered approach to sharing data was necessary to be inclusive of as many partners as possible. Also it was desired to use and enhance what the partners had already contributed – the metadata records to the GCMD portal. To that end, the scope of the EN grant was broadened to include a catalog record that would integrate organization and project data elements from the Water Quality Exchange with the metadata elements of the GCMD.

Using the ODP IE, we will demonstrate, through functional prototypes the early stages of the web application for the GoMODP Exchange Network data portal.

Actions:

  • Support the integration of the Global Change Master Directory metadata records into the ODP Data Exchange and enhance the web application.
    • Evaluate and begin working with the GCMD API to harvest and display metadata records for GoMODP partners.
    • Develop a visual interface to display lists of partners with records, select fields (relevant to EN) and maps of geospatial extent (bounding boxes) to demonstrate the utility of the GCMD API and Google Maps interface.
      • Ideally this visual implementation of ‘dots on a map’ will motivate partners to improve their metadata records so that the end goal – the EN data access portal – will have the best available information.
      • GCMD Google Maps Interface - View Prototype
  • Develop Google Map prototype of monitoring locations. This prototype uses GoMOOS, NOAA and other partner buoys. Additionally, we will integrate USGS WQX-compliant web services to demonstrate monitoring locations for EN web application.

2) Improve partners’ metadata records to the Global Change Master Directory (GCMD), improvements to GoMODP.org website.

A concerted effort is needed to help partners develop and/or update their metadata records or identify them if they exist but have not been included in the portal.  Once the visualization of the GCMD records is complete, outreach and support will be provided to the partnership to encourage the modification and clean up of records so that the quality of metadata is improved for the EN data portal.

Actions:

  • Review metadata with partners by contacting them directly and walking them through the newly developed metadata review tools as it relates to their data.
  • Develop “how to” guides for partners interested in updating their metadata records and for new partners adding records for the first time.
  • Update the GoMODP.org website to make a compelling case for new members to join the partnership and add metadata records.
    • Developed draft home page with diagram and descriptions relating community data sharing initiatives and GoMODP
    • Moved old content to archive, added links to join partnership on main navigation
