Ocean Data Partnership Interoperability Experiment (ODP IE)

by NeCODP last modified Mar 27, 2009 02:49 PM

Through the ODP IE, a Google-maps application was developed that displays metadata records from the GoMOPD portal at Global Change Master Directory. The map indicates the bounding boxes for the various data centers and Entry IDs from the GoMODP Portal at GCMD. A specific sub-set of metadata from each record is displayed that will be used as discovery data for our Exchange Network web application. Additionally, we prototyped a similar mapping application to display monitoring locations. The prototype is using WQX compliant XML from the USGS as a test case.

Introduction

At the outset of the Exchange Network project, several of the participating partners suggested we try and use as much of the metadata content in the GCMD as possible. The rationale was that the partnership has made a concerted effort to encourage and help partners to enter metadata records, and minimizing duplication was encouraged. The partnership has also worked with GCMD Coordinator Melanie Meaux to set up a portal for all data sets within the Gulf of Maine. Additionally, an API for the GCMD was available to harvest metadata records.

With a small number of partners participating in the full Exchange Network project, we determined that if feasible, we should develop a three-tiered approach to  increase the level of participation in the GoMODP/Exchange Network for members of the partnership and ultimately develop a more robust application. In this approach, Partners can:

    • Share only metadata record from GCMD. This means that the basic catalog information and GETDATA links will appear in the data discovery component of the application.
      • We are using a subset of GCMD fields to build the catalog component of the GCMD exchange
    • Share metadata and upload monitoring locations. Partners will use simple HTML page (part of node client) or web service to upload XML file of monitoring locations.
    • Full data sharing through NEIEN (metadata, monitoring locations, data access). Data will be searchable, accessible and available for download directly through portal.

The ODP Interoperability Experiment provided an opportunity to investigate using the GCMD records, and to prototype the functionality of this three-tiered approach to the ultimate web application to be developed at the end of the Exchange Network project.

GoMODP/GCMD Metadata Checking Tool

This functional prototype demonstrates the utility of harvesting GCMD records and displaying in a Google Map application. The records are from the GoMODP Portal at the GCMD.

Monitoring Locations Map

This prototype demonstrates the use of WQX compliant XML data to add monitoring locations to a Google Map. The test case is a subset of USGS data for estuary monitoring in the Gulf of Maine.
