FY09 Exchange Network Project: Enabling Geospatial Data Exchange to Support Environmental Decision Making — by NeCODP — last modified Feb 12, 2010 11:30 AM

To support coordinated management of watershed and marine resources, the partners on this proposal will exchange multi-jurisdictional data with geospatial data compliant with Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards. A web application that integrates geospatial data with water quality data from multiple organizations and states will be developed to improve environmental resource management and decision making for Gulf of Maine watershed.

To further Northeast Coastal and Ocean Data Partnership (NeCODP) data interoperability, members of the partnership are participating in an Exchange Network project. The goals of the project are to use the EN infrastructure and protocols to share oceanographic and environmental data. A host node will be developed at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (host for the NeCODP). An XML schema will be developed based on the EN Water Quality Exchange (WQX) schema and other standards as necessary depending on the data. Data will be available though a spatially referenced web application.

The Ocean Data Partnership Interoperability Experiment (ODP IE) supports the ODP’s mission to advance data discoverability, accessibility, and interoperability in the Northeast region. The proposal emphasizes the importance of adapting and leveraging several other projects, many of which are already funded and include ODP members. It is also meant to provide funding for coordination and for identifying and supplying missing pieces to create a single coherent effort by pulling together complementary efforts in the Data Partnership in order to maximize this effort’s progress and scope.

One 2005 goal for the data partnership was to enable every partner's data to be "discoverable" at either GeoConnections or the GeoSpatial One-Stop by the end of the year. To begin that process, the partnership through the Census of Marine Life contracted with Lou Van Guelpen of the Huntsman Marine Science Center to work with several partners to generate metadata.
