NeCODP Data Discovery and Download Portal Launched
For the last two years, a subset of the NeCODP has been working on developing a data exchange for oceanographic and environmental data using the protocols of the Exchange Network. This is to let you know of our progress and announce the launch of the NeCODP Data Discovery and Download Portal - (a spatially referenced web application where users can discover, access and download data sets from the Northeast region and beyond - thanks to DFO, NERRS and SEANET for extending our reach beyond the GOM!)
The web data portal was a final deliverable of the project and was completed in July 2010.
Eight NeCODP partners participated in the project and helped develop the schema (based largely on the Exchange Network Water Quality Exchange - WQX). We extended the schema to include more geospatial data such as lines (beach transects), polygons (cruise tracks, reserve boundaries) and elements from the Open Geospatial Consortium SOS standard (for time-series buoy data). The partners then mapped their data to the new schema (ODPX) and submitted data sets to the node (the server housed at GMRI that manages the data submissions and portal). GMRI set up the node and developed the data portal with input from the project partners.
The data is in the NeCODP Exchange Network node, and is now accessible by the NeCODP Data Discovery and Download Portal -
A few interesting factoids:
8 Organizations submitted data to the node. These organizations contributed:
--401 Projects
--5,147 Monitoring Locations
--51,481 Activities
--964,452 (and counting) Results!!
These nearly a million results are made up of water quality, contaminants, oceanographic and meteorological observations, beach and trawl surveys, and more...
The portal can be found here: http://odpdx.neracoos.org/
We would love to have your feedback on the portal now that the data is in place and is accessible through the tools on the site. The portal is limited to the data provided directly by the project participants and the portal has fairly limited functionality. We intend to build on this work as we get underway with our our second Exchange Network project, leveraging our node and portal to build a decision support tool for the water quality management community. If you are interested in learning more or getting involved in that project, please visit our project page on the NeCODP website:
